The Silver Rush: Navigating the 2026 Golden Lake Smelt Run

It’s that time of year again in the Ottawa Valley. As the ice clears and water temperatures hit that magic 4°C to 10°C mark, the Rainbow Smelt are beginning their annual nighttime ascent into the tributaries of Golden Lake. While they may be small, their impact on our local ecosystem is massive.

🌊 Why We "Dip" (It’s Not Just for Dinner)

While many associate the smelt run with buckets and fryers, for the Golden Lake Property Owners Association (GLPOA), it’s a mission of conservation.

  • The Invasive Issue: Rainbow Smelt are an invasive species here. They compete with native Yellow Perch and Walleye for food and have a nasty habit of eating the larvae of our local sport fish.

  • Population Control: Every smelt pulled out of a creek during the run is one less predator threatening the diversity of Golden Lake.

🎣 The Art of the Night Run

If you’re heading out this week, remember the "Smelters' Code":

  1. Timing: Smelt are light-sensitive. The best dipping happens under the cover of darkness, usually between 10:00 PM and 2:00 AM.

  2. Gear: A long-handled dip net and a sturdy bucket are all you need. Don't forget a high-quality headlamp (but try not to shine it directly into the water for too long, or you'll spook the school!).

Apparel (The Crucial Layer):

  1. The Right Waders: While chest waders are popular, hip waders are often ideal for the shallower creeks and tributaries where the run is most accessible. They offer mobility and protection from the cold water while being slightly less restrictive. Always wear a belt over your hip waders to prevent them from filling with water should you slip.

  2. Warm Layers: Do not underestimate the cold. Even with waders, the water is just above freezing. Merino wool socks and thermal base layers are essential.

📱 Get Real-Time Updates

The smelt run is notoriously finicky—they might be "in" one night and gone the next. To get the latest reports on which creeks are running and where the action is, join the community over at the Golden Lake Smelt Updates group: Join the Facebook Group: Smelt Run Updates

🍴 Save the Date: The GLPOA Smelt Fry

The real reward for all this effort comes later this spring. The GLPOA uses the smelt caught during this run to host their legendary community meal.
